WHAT TO WEAR FOR A FAMILY SHOOT

styling tips for the looks that won’t outdate

When you consider your style for a family shoot, think about what kind of family you are and how you see yourselves. If you lean towards formal elegance, dressing in chic, polished outfits could be perfect for your portraits. For those who prioritize comfort and simplicity, a casual t-shirt or sweater with denim might be just right.

If you love variety, we can split the session into parts, some with a formal tone and others more laid-back. Discuss this with us beforehand so we can plan your experience perfectly. That way, you’re dressed appropriately right from the start.

1. CHOOSE YOUR COLOR PATELETTE

We recommend selecting 3-5 colors for your family’s wardrobe. Neutrals and soft tones are the easiest to coordinate and create a timeless look, while bright, bold hues can sometimes overpower. Start by choosing one outfit you love, then build the rest of the family’s looks around it. If your chosen piece has a pattern, draw colors from it to tie the other outfits together.

Also, keep in mind where you plan to display these photos at home, do the backdrop and clothing colors complement your decor?

2. WEARING WHITE

White is a very popular choice for family photography and can look sensational creating a minimalist modern look.

3. WEARING BLACK

Black may sound like an easy choice for many, we believe black looks rather heavy in family portraits and suggest to go with navy or grey instead.

4. ADD TEXTURE

Using clothing with textures in your family’s wardrobe adds a layer of sophistication to your photos. Consider fabrics like knit, waffle, linen, corduroy to introduce texture and depth. Additionally, opting for garments that move, like flowing skirts and dresses, can bring a dynamic and elegant feel to your session.

5. AVOID LOGOS AND BOLD PATTERS

Keep it simple and clean. We like the focus to be on the emotion and connection of the family. Solids and muted prints work well for that. Skip logos (like famous massive Polo Ralph Lauren) and words as they draw the eye. Floral patterns look great when mixed with your partner’s solid color outfits. However, keep patterns to a minimum, avoud checks and graphic patters as they distract. We want your family to be the star! The clothing should complement, not take over.

6. DRESS FOR COMFORT

The secret to great style is to feel good in what you wear. Comfortable clothes will help you radiate extra confidence during your shoot. Clothes that are uncomfortable or out of your usual style might affect how you appear in the photos.

7 . MATCH OR NOT?

The answer is simple: some of our clients love to match while others don’t. If you’re a family who likes to match, then go for it. If you prefer to each dress in your unique style, that’s fantastic too!

8. FOOTWEAR.

While we love the relaxed, informal vibe of barefoot portraits, if you choose to go shoe-free, don’t forget to pamper your feet with pedicure! If going barefoot isn’t your family’s style, remember to consider your footwear choices carefully. Nothing will throw your look off more than a tired pair of shoes or dirty runners. Same as clothes, your shoes need to be comfortable allowing movement and clean.

TRY CLOTHES ON A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE SHOOT

Wear clothes that fit. Check if you can squat, sit on the ground and move around easily. You’ll be sitting, standing, reclining, and cuddling each other as we are changing poses and compositions so beware of very short skirts or tops that gape open. Also, check that bras don’t become visible as you move and that tops are long enough to cover your midriff.

What NOT to wear

  • Active wear and other types of sport clothes and shoes.
  • Busy pattters and large logos.
  • Neon colors.
  • Business attire is something that I wouldn’t recommend you wearing for any session other than personal branding one.
  • Restricting fashions and fabrics. If you feel stiff in your clothes you will look stiff in photos. Go with comfortable options.
